When Momo Hubs Break the Rules

Odd numbers, and the hubs that don’t play by the book.

Momo Hub Lists Are Only a Starting Point

Momo hub guides are incredibly useful. They list solid and collapsible hubs, link part numbers to vehicle types, and save countless hours of research. But as any collector or restorer will tell you, sometimes reality doesn’t follow the rules. Rare prototypes, dealership specials, or custom-made hubs can appear that aren’t in any official list.

Take, for example, the mysterious hub C 2908 3605 7601. It didn’t match any known Momo part numbers, yet the hub clearly existed. This is exactly why knowing the rules is only half the battle—recognizing exceptions is equally important.

Why Some Hubs Don’t Fit the Lists

There are a few reasons a hub might defy the lists:

  • Prototype or Test Hubs – Not every part Momo produced was sold commercially. Some were only made for testing or limited runs.
  • Production Variations – Small adjustments or revisions over the years could result in part numbers that don’t line up with tables.
  • Modifications – Sometimes, a hub was slightly altered post-production, making it unique.

How to Handle Unknown Momo Hubs

If you encounter a hub that doesn’t match known part numbers:

  • Examine the back of the hub and the horn contact ring. Familiar designs can provide clues.
  • Compare bolt patterns (PCD) with known Momo or Nardi standards to see if it’s compatible with your steering wheel.
  • Reach out to experts or online communities; someone might recognize a rare number or special variant.
  • Treat it carefully. Even if the hub looks solid, modifications or rare designs may affect fit or safety.

The Takeaway

Momo hub guides are fantastic, but expect exceptions. Rare numbers, prototypes, and custom hubs exist. Collectors and restorers need to combine lists, experience, and expert advice to fully understand a hub’s origin and compatibility.

And remember: a hub not listed doesn’t mean it’s wrong – it might just be extraordinary.
