Small Buttons, Big Legacy

Horn buttons may look tiny, but in the Momo Signature Series, they are essential. Each button pairs with a signature steering wheel, often showcasing race driver helmets or authentic signatures, making them coveted collectibles.

Origins of the Momo Signature Series

The series began in the mid-1970s with the Jackie Stewart steering wheel, the first Momo wheel featuring a stacked logo. Early helmet horn buttons were produced with chrome rings, including Stewart, Clay Regazzoni, and Jacky Ickx. By the mid-1970s, Momo transitioned to black plastic rings, a style that became standard for later helmets and signature buttons.

Early Chrome Ring vs. Later Plastic Ring

  • Chrome Ring Helmets (1974–1976): Jackie Stewart, Clay Regazzoni, Jacky Ickx
  • Plastic Ring Helmets: Niki Lauda, Ronnie Peterson, Gilles Villeneuve, Mario Andretti

All helmet illustrations in the Momo Signature Series face to the right – except for the Jacky Ickx version, which is the only one facing left. This makes it a subtle but distinctive outlier within the series.

Signature Horn Buttons

Signature buttons were sold individually, not always paired with a steering wheel. Known color schemes include:

  • Red or yellow with a black signature
  • Black or beige with a silver signature

No verified Clay Regazzoni signature horn button has been documented to date.

Collecting Tips

Producing a horn button was far simpler and less risky than creating a full steering wheel. As a result, a wide range of horn buttons exists in different colors, logos, and brand variations. The exact number is unknown, offering enthusiasts endless opportunities to expand their collections.

  • Some Helmet Horn Buttons like the ones from Dieter Quester and George Follmer are nearly impossible to find.
  • Verify authenticity – not all horn buttons on the market are legitimate.
  • Each button represents a piece of racing history, design evolution, and Momo’s dedication to its drivers.
