OEM Momo designs adapted for Volvo R Sport — shared DNA, shifting details, no fixed model.
by Mads – August 28, 2020

Some steering wheels don’t start as themselves.
They start as something else — and only later become what we call them today.
The Volvo R Sport steering wheels made by Momo sit exactly in that space.
Not a single design.
Not a single model.
But a small system of variations built around one idea: adapting existing Momo designs for a very specific automotive context.

Momo didn’t always create from scratch for every brand.
In many cases, they worked with what already existed.
Known designs were adjusted.
Details shifted.
Finishes changed.
Sometimes only slightly enough that the origin stays visible — but not identical anymore.
The Volvo R Sport wheels belong to that group.
They are not standalone inventions.
They are reinterpretations of existing Momo steering wheels.
Within the Volvo collaboration, there seem to be two parallel approaches.
One is clearly marked.
With R Sport part numbers engraved directly on the wheel — sometimes on the center spoke, sometimes offset to the side.
The other is more subtle.
Volvo branding appears on the spoke itself, integrated into the design language rather than separated from it.
Same manufacturer.
Same base logic.
Different intent.

If you look closely, the foundation is not new.
Some of the wheels trace back to known Momo designs:
Momo often reused its own visual language.
What changes is not the structure — but the context it is placed into.
Across the Volvo R Sport range, nothing is completely uniform.
Some wheels carry horn pads, others don’t.
Some have additional markings, others remain visually clean.
Even within the same general design, part numbers vary.
And all of them appear to sit within a shared diameter range around 350 mm — at least in the examples that are known today.

Interestingly, Volvo is not alone in this kind of collaboration.
Saab wheels made by Momo show similar behaviour — different sizes, different markings, different production choices — despite no formal connection between the brands beyond geography.
It shows how Momo operated in this period:
less like a closed catalogue
and more like a flexible production system adapting to different manufacturers.
Despite all variation, one thing stays stable:
the underlying Momo identity is never fully erased.
Even when logos change or markings differ, the proportions, feel, and construction language remain recognisable.
That is often what makes these wheels difficult to classify at first glance.
They are not deviations.
They are adaptations.
The Volvo R Sport steering wheels are not a single model.
They are a trace of how Momo worked at the time — reusing, refining, adjusting, and quietly embedding their own design DNA into different automotive worlds.
Not officially celebrated.
Not always clearly documented.
But consistent enough that once you’ve seen a few, you start recognising them immediately.
And that is usually how these things begin to matter.
