Fifty made. Unknown survivors. And a story that never went into production.

Rare Momo De Sanctis Roma steering wheel

Some wheels are rare.

Some are undocumented.

And then there are the ones where we actually know the number —
and it still doesn’t help much.

Fifty

That’s it.

Fifty steering wheels ever made.

Not a limited edition.
Not a catalog product.
Not even officially released.

Just fifty pieces, built for Gino and Lucio De Sanctis by Gianpiero Moretti in the early days of Momo.

Before Momo became Momo

Back then, this wasn’t a brand.

It was a workshop.

Racing drivers, small constructors, ideas moving fast between people who knew each other.

The De Sanctis team was part of that world – building their own cars, competing in Formula Junior, Formula 3 and beyond.

And somewhere in that environment, this steering wheel was created.

Almost – but not quite

Moretti liked the design.

There was a thought to bring it into production.

It never happened.

No catalogue entry.
No official release.
No second chance.

One of them found its way

Into the hands of Jonathan Williams.

Formula 3 talent.
Ferrari works driver – briefly.
Part of a generation that moved between racing, engineering and improvisation.

His career never fully unfolded.

But pieces like this remain.

What makes it different

It’s not just the number.

It’s the context.

A steering wheel tied to a specific team, a specific moment, a specific network of people — before things became structured, documented, repeatable.

Before everything had a product code.

Final Thought

Rarity alone doesn’t make something interesting.

But when rarity meets origin, story, and a path that was never continued —

you don’t get a collectible.

You get an endpoint.
