Incorrectly Stamped Momo Jackie Stewart

Two eras. One wheel. And a mistake that makes it more interesting.

by Mads – August 28, 2020

Some wheels stand out immediately.

This one doesn’t.

At first glance, it’s just another Momo Jackie Stewart. Flat, clean, familiar. One of the most recognizable steering wheels Momo ever made.

Nothing unusual.

Until you turn it around.

What it should look like

Over the years, Momo used different markings on the back:

  • early stacked Momo logo
  • later “Made in Italy”
  • eventually production date codes

Each of them roughly tied to a production period.

Not exact — but close enough to place a wheel within a certain era.

What this one does instead

This wheel doesn’t follow that logic.

It carries two markings from two different periods:

The early stacked Momo logo — typically associated with the late 60s to early 70s.

And stamped over it:

“Made in Italy” — a marking that belongs to a later phase.

Same wheel. Two timelines.

What likely happened

Not a special edition.

Not a transition model.

Most likely something much simpler.

A wheel produced with an earlier base — stamped once, then stamped again later, without removing what was already there.

No intention.

Just process.

Why it matters

Because it breaks the pattern.

And once a pattern breaks, certainty disappears.

Dating becomes guesswork.
Classification becomes interpretation.

And the wheel becomes something else entirely.

Final Thought

Collectors don’t just look for perfection.

They look for things that shouldn’t have happened — but did.

Because those are the ones you can’t reproduce.
