The Formula 1 Steering Wheel That Doesn’t Exist

A size never catalogued — yet unmistakably real.

by Mads – January 22, 2022

It shouldn’t be here.

At least not according to any brochure, catalogue or official listing.

And yet it exists.

A Formula 1 Enterprises steering wheel in a size that was never made.

The known versions

The Formula 1 Enterprises Real Wheel is usually known in three sizes:

380mm (15″)
355mm (14″)
and smaller competition variants around 280mm and below.

Black is the common choice. Silver exists too. Catalogues are clear: these are the sizes.

End of story.

The problem

But real wheels don’t always follow catalogues.

Some versions show thumb pads. Some carry slightly different markings. Some place the circled “1” in different positions on the spoke.

Nothing dramatic on its own — but enough to raise questions when you’ve seen enough of them.

The 315mm wheel

Then there is this one.

315mm.

A size that is not supposed to exist in the official range.

No brochure mentions it. No period ad lists it. And yet it is real.

Same design language. Same Formula 1 Enterprises branding. But a different proportion — slightly tighter, more direct, almost prototype-like in feel.

What it might be

In the mid to late 60s, MOMO was not a clean product catalogue company yet.

It was a workshop of parallel developments — racing projects, prototype parts, customer requests, experiments, and early production runs overlapping each other.

In that environment, a wheel like this doesn’t need an official explanation to exist.

It only needs a reason once.

The back tells another story

No markings.

No stamped identity.

Nothing that confirms production as we know it today.

Which makes it either irrelevant…

or exactly the opposite.

Final Thought

Not every steering wheel is documented.

Some are remembered only because they survived.

And sometimes the most interesting pieces are the ones that were never meant to become official at all.
