If you’re into classic BMWs, you already know—once the bug bites, it doesn’t let go.
From the raw simplicity of the 2002 to the elegance of early coupes, BMW has built some of the most characterful cars ever made.

Over the years, I’ve collected quite a few BMW books—some for deep technical knowledge, others simply because they look damn good on a coffee table. This list is a curated selection of the ones I actually keep and come back to.

Yes, there’s a strong focus on the BMW 2002 (I just love that car), but you’ll also find great reads covering BMW history, design, and engineering.

This book in my opinion is the best book to read about and understand the history of BMW as one of the leading car and motorcycle manufacturers. It chronicles this remarkable company through a lot of photos of cars and motorcycles they have built, from the early pre-war R32 to the a lot more modern cars today. It also shows a lot about their model development over the years, cars as well as motorcycles. It contains hundreds of historic photos, sourced from BMW archives. A must have for any BMW fan.

BMW Art Cars

Probably the most unique part of BMW history. This book tells the story of the famous Art Cars — from the first 3.0 CSL by Alexander Calder to the later collaborations with world-renowned artists. A mix of racing, art, and design that you don’t see anywhere else.

3. BMW Art Cars

Alexander Calder’s BMW 3.0 CSL from 1975 was the first in a series brought to life by Hervé Poulain, lover of auto racing and works of art, In collaboration with BMW’s head of motorsports, Jochen Neerpasch. Nineteen artists have since designed BMW models, and these “rolling sculptures have proved themselves not only in museums but also on the racetrack at Le Mans. 19 other artists followed and designed the most Iconic racing cars ever.
