Installation Guide – How to Install an Aftermarket Steering Wheel

Step-by-Step Installation – How to Mount Your Steering Wheel

This guide walks you through installing any aftermarket steering wheel – classic Momo, rare Victor, Petri, Abarth, Nardi… whatever the brand. It all works the same way for every aftermarket wheel.

Aftermarket wheels are universal by design, but to mount one on your car you always need a hub adapter made for that specific vehicle. The hub connects the wheel to the steering column. The wheel then bolts onto the hub – the bolt pattern has to match. No magic, no forcing anything.

Step 1: Remove the Stock Wheel

Most classic cars have a splined mounting with a single central nut.
Simple, but keep track of washers and spacers – you’ll need them later.

Step 2: Pick the Right Hub Adapter

Every wheel needs a hub. Choose one that fits your steering column and your wheel type.
Solid or collapsible? We’ve got guides for that in the Hub Adapters Hub.

Step 3: Wire the Hub

Horns, buttons, maybe an airbag resistor – follow the hub instructions. Airbags?
Only if you know what you’re doing; otherwise, let a pro handle it.

Step 4: Bolt Everything Together

Attach the hub to the column, then the wheel to the hub. Six bolts or so, hand-tight first, then torque to spec.
Feels like putting together a high-end Lego set – but for grown-ups.

Step 5 (Optional): Spacers & Quick Release

Track car? Race seats? Deep dish steering wheel?
Add spacers to get the perfect reach, or a quick release kit for easier entry and exit. Our favorite brands are tested and ready.

Step 6: Special Cases – Victor / Kremer Wheels

Rare wheels like Victor / Kremer Porsche? Don’t drill holes!
Use a PATIPATINA adapter and keep your classic intact.

Q: What about Quick Release kits?

A: Perfect for track cars, race seats, or if you just like that “snap-in” feeling. We’ve tested the most reliable kits.
